OBO

One of the things that's very interesting about some people in this town is the phenomenon of OBO. It stands for Or Better Offer and it refers to those people who say that they will meet up with you or come to something that you've arranged and then cancel at the last minute because they get a better offer, or somebody more glamorous invites them somewhere and they drop you like a hot brick. I often think that as a behaviour it's a little short sighted if not a little hurtful. The problem is that there is only so many times that you are going to make plans with that person before realising that they are like that, and you stop inviting them altogether. I try as hard as I possibly can to make sure that if I say I am going to do something with somebody, I try to do it, regardless of what other things might then be going on. Fair weather friends are not really the kind we're looking for at this point in life so when it happens it's a lot easier these days to just shrug it off and move that person from "friend" to "acquaintance" without bitterness or rancour or disagreement.
That said, this week has been a great work week. We had some more amazing work news involving Paul's TV show here in the states and it's funny how we always remember where we are when we get great life-changing news like that. This time we were driving over Coldwater Canyon and got the call. Isn't it funny when you hear news and get the most amazing feeling from the end of your toes to the tip of your nose, like a tingle that makes you smile. It's a fabulous feeling, and we got it this week.
After that excitement we had a fabulous weekend. Clare and Paul went to dinner at Soho House a few nights in a row with different friends like Ross King and Dougray and Claire. Then on Sunday we had a farewell bon voyage lunch for Steven Cree who is going home. We invited a few different people that had become friends of his while he was here, it was a lovely lunch and we had a fantastic time with Matthew Rhys (the nicest actor in Hollywood) and had the treat of hanging out with Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie who were also there having lunch which was fab. The hugely talented Max Beesley was playing piano in a jazz quartet and they sounded fantastic.
All in all a perfect weekend that ended up in the screening room where a bunch of us watched Hurt Locker.....not my favourite movie but we had fun regardless.....did I tell you how happy I am right now :))))))))))))))
